Woodcock Watch

Friday, March 15, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Wolf Run Regional Park, 17621 Yauger Rd., Mount Vernon

The Park District is pleased to offer once again a Woodcock Watch.  This is an opportunity to observe the annual courtship ritual and aerial flight of the American Woodcock.  Local expert, Scott Albaugh returns to lead this popular event and this time around it will be held at Wolf Run Park.  The chunky-bodied, big-eyed American Woodcock is a favorite amongst birders and non-birders alike because of their dramatic aerial courtship display and the sounds they make.  On the ground, they make a buzzing, nasally “peent” and during their aerial courtship flight that can take them spiraling 300 feet into the air, they make twittering sounds as they dive back to the ground.  Participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for muddy trails.
