Mohican Valley Multi-Use Trail
The Mohican Valley Trail consists of a 5 mile trail which runs along an abandoned right-of-way of the old Penn Central Railroad on the eastern edge of Knox County between Brinkhaven and Danville. The trail features the beautiful Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven. The bridge is a 370-foot covered bridge across the Mohican River valley. It is the second longest covered bridge in Ohio and the third in the country.
The trail connects to the Kokosing Gap Trail in Danville and extends to the Holmes County line. The parking lot for the Bridge of Dreams is located at 16606 Hunter Road in Brinkhaven, 43006. Download a trail guide and map. A short video shows the construction of this remarkable bridge, the second longest covered bridge in Ohio, the third longest in the United States.
Visitors to the Bridge of Dreams will sense the rich history of the area, particularly the relics left behind by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Mohican Valley Trail allows equestrian and buggy use as well as pedestrians and cyclists. The horse hitching posts located at the trailhead at 16606 Hunter Road, Brinkhaven are constructed out of original metal pipe used on the railroad. The steel beams that form the structure for the Bridge of Dreams were erected in 1944. This portion of the Pennsylvania Railroad closed after the 1959 flood washed out the track and bridges to the east.
We encourage mountain cyclists, Amish buggy and horse riders to utilize this terrific and picturesque view. While enjoying the solitude of this rustic trail, listen for the songs of Indigo Buntings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Orioles, Eastern Towhees and Great-crested Flycatchers. Spring wildflowers adorn portions of the trail, including large-flowered trillium and wild sweet William (wild blue phlox).
Users of the Mohican Valley Trail can continue riding west, past Danville, on the Kokosing Gap Trail. Horses are not allowed on the Kokosing Gap Trail, however. Both trails are also components of the Ohio to Erie Trail. The planned 320-mile route, of which over 240 miles are complete and open for use, will eventually span Ohio from the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland to the Ohio River in Cincinnati. There is paving underway to extend this trail several miles further east from the eastern endpoint. View a map that gives directions between the Mohican Valley and Kokosing Gap Trails in Danville.
