On October 5, 2016 the Kokosing Gap Trail celebrated its 25th Anniversary, having opened the first four-miles of paved trail on that date in 1991.  The Kokosing Gap Trail enjoys the distinction of being designated as one of the best rails to trails in the United States by the Rails to Trails Conservancy, a national rail-trail advocacy group. View a map (PDF) of the trail. Visit the Kokosing Gap Trail official web site for more information.  A mill and railroad tunnel greet users in the hamlet of Howard. The Knox County Park District serves as a partner of the Kokosing Gap Trail organization, a 501c3. The Park District entered into a long-term lease with the Knox County Commissioners (who own the land beneath the trail) to maintain the parking area surfaces for the trail in Mount Vernon (43050) at 500 Mount Vernon Ave.;  Gambier locations (43022) at 9943 Laymon Rd., 297 Duff St., 22500 Stull Rd., 10921 Killduff Rd.; Howard (43028) at 23316 Coshocton Rd.; and the Danville terminus (43014) located at 715 Trail Dr.  The trail amenities include a drinking water fountain and restrooms (open seasonally) in Gambier.  Upgrades such as pavement sealant back in 2008 were made possible, in part, by the passage of the Knox County Park District levy in 2008.

The Village of Danville maintains a beautiful picnic shelter and drinking water fountain at the Trail Drive parking lot at the eastern terminus of the trail.  Users of the Kokosing Gap Trail can continue riding east, past Danville, on the Mohican Valley Trail. The Mohican Valley Trail was chip and seal paved in the autumn of 2015.   View a map that gives directions between the Kokosing Gap and Mohican Valley Trails in Danville.

The Kokosing Gap Trail in Howard at the 23316 Coshocton Rd. parking lot serves as a staging area for one of the Park District’s parks, Hellbender Preserve.
